Kinnow is a mandarin hybrid fruit that is widely grown in Punjab, India. It is a major source of vitamin C and is known for its juice-rich fruits.
Origin
Kinnow is a hybrid between King (Citrus nobilis) and Willow Leaf (Citrus deliciosa) mandarins.
It was developed in 1915 by Dr. H.B. Frost at the University of California Citrus Experiment Station.
It was released for commercial cultivation in 1935.
Growing conditions
Kinnow thrives in temperatures between 13-37°C and rainfall of 300-400mm.
It can grow in a wide range of soils, including sandy loam, clay loam, and deep clay loam.
The soil pH should be between 5.5 and 7.5.
Harvesting
Kinnow is ready to harvest in January.
The harvested fruits should be washed with water followed by a chlorine wash.
Marketing
Kinnow growers face problems such as high price fluctuations, inefficient market infrastructure, and high transportation charges.
